Leaders of the PACK: Getting to Know Noel Loban

Check out today's interview with Volunteer Assistant Noel Loban.

Q: What made you decide to be a college wrestling coach?
A: Growing up and participating in numerous sports allowed me the benefit to be impacted by different coaches throughout my life.  There influence in my life has left an indelible impression that is part responsible for who I am today.  My desire and hope is that I can continue that same legacy, in impacting and influencing young men to not only attain their greatest potential in wrestling but to equally become “Great Men”.

Q: What is your favorite style of wrestling to coach? Why?
A: Freestyle wrestling up until a few years ago was my passion, because it affords the wrestler to employ a different level of tactics and strategies not utilized in folkstyle.  Having made the transition back to Colligate/folkstyle, once again I thoroughly enjoy the “riding time" concept and how that element can strongly contribute to being a champion.

Q: What is your most memorable moment as a coach? As a wrestler?
A: As a coach.. Meticulously working through a game plan with Darrion Caldwell before his final match at the NCAA’s against Brent Metcalf and seeing him execute that game plan with faultless precision, confidence and flare from start to finish.  Going on to win the National Championship in dominating fashion along with the Outstanding Wrestler award…that is a great memory!  As a wrestler... Being fortunate enough to have competed successfully for 7 years on the International circuit and travel the World…great memories…great moments!

Q: When did you start wrestling as a kid and who pushed you the most throughout your career?
A: I started wrestling in 10th grade which is relatively late for our sport.  But I fell in love with it…not because I was a natural! I wasn’t but I enjoyed it even though nothing came easy.  I didn’t get any support from my family but it kept me out of trouble and off the streets.  I owe the sport everything since it kept me buoyed during some rough times in my youth.  Apart from that I pretty much have always pushed myself.

Q: What is your favorite wrestling movie?
A: To have a favorite of anything you need more than one to compare it with unfortunately I have only seen Vision Quest which negates the question.

Q: Who is your favorite professional sports team:
A: British Football – Tottingham Hotspurs, & Arsenal
American Football – Pittsburgh Steelers
Basketball – Miami Heat
Baseball – NY Yankees

Q: What is your favorite TV Show?

A: Modern Family - Humor
Burn Notice - Action
National Geographic - Life

Q: What is the last book you've read?
A: Holy Bible

Q: What is your favorite food?
A: I enjoy spicy flavored foods; Thai, Caribbean, and Indian Cuisine.

Q: What is your favorite Raleigh-area restaurant?
A: Lemon Tree & Shuckers

Leaders of the PACK: Getting to Know Quinton Godley

Check out today's interview with Student Assistant Quinton Godley:

Q: What made you decide to be a college wrestling coach?
A: Well I'm not officially a college coach, but I do not mind being part of that category.  I decided to volunteer my time this year with the team because having a familiar face in the room every now and then may bring comfort to some of the guys that were here the year before; however, I'm willing to spread my knowledge about the sport - the way I was taught and still learning - any way possible.

Q: What is your favorite style of wrestling to coach? Why?
A: Folkstyle is the only style I wrestle and I know more about that, therefore it's my favorite style to coach.

Q: What is your most memorable moment as a coach? As a wrestler?
A: Again, I'm new to coaching, but from what I have already experienced, the guys' eagerness/willingness to learn the sport at the college level is just astonishing and motivates me beyond explanation.  My most memorable moment as a wrestler was my senior year, after knocking off two ranked guys ahead of me, I faced my last ranked victim before ACCs & Nationals.  This wrestler was ranked extremely high and the match came down to mentality - which to me is 99% of the game.

Q: When did you start wrestling as a kid and who pushed you the most throughout your career?
A: I first started wrestling my sophomore year in high school.  Unfortunately, I didn't start before then, but again the sport is 99% mental and if it I had anything, it was mentality and it's still running.  My high school coach Dennis Marshall is the main reason I was able to wrestle here at NC State and was the person who pushed me the hardest throughout my high school career; he pushed my team and I to the edge but pushed me a little extra because I guess he thought I had potential.  As I got to college, Dennis Marshall was more so my main motivation - I refused to let him down.  I met Noel Loban when I got here and he was the person who pushed me throughout my college career & two years later was accompanied by Lee Pritts.

Q: What is your favorite wrestling movie?
A: This is a good question but I don't have a favorite wrestling movie and have not seen many.  The only wrestling movie I have seen, and a little embarrassed to mention, is "Going to the Mat."

Q: Who is your favorite professional sports team:
A: Football: CAROLINA PANTHERS ALL DAY!
Basketball: Don't have a favorite team but pull for the Miami Heat most of the time.

Q: What is your favorite TV Show?
A: My favorite TV show is Jamie Foxx & SpongeBob Square Pants is my favorite "cartoon" show - don't judge, it relaxes me!

Q: What is the last book you've read?
A: Code of the Streets by Elijah Anderson.  I'm currently reading the Holy Bible but that will take me a while.

Q: What is your favorite food?
A: I love answering this question because people become so appalled when I tell them, but my favorite food is chitterlings.  What do you expect from a down south breed?

Q: What is your favorite Raleigh-area restaurant so far?
A: My favorite restaurant, whether in Raleigh or anywhere else is Applebee's, mainly because of their 2 for $20 deal & they also have great desserts.

Our last interview with the coaching staff will be tomorrow with Volunteer Assistant Noel Loban.

Leaders of the PACK: Getting to Know Jeff Breese

Here's today's interview with Director of Operations Jeff Breese:

Q: What made you decide to be a college wrestling coach?
A: I have always had a passion for coaching and wrestling.  I think I inherit that from my Dad.  I have had other jobs, but nothing has compared to college coaching.

Q: What is your favorite style of wrestling to coach? Why?
A: Freestyle is fun to coach, but folkstyle is still my favorite.  I really enjoy teaching guys the details of mat wrestling.

Q: What is your most memorable moment as a coach?
A: Every season brings a new favorite moment when I see one of my athletes achieve a goal he set for himself.  It is hard to say one stands out more than another.  Last season, watching my 141-pounder break through and avenge a loss to make the NCAA Tournament was a highlight.

Q: When did you start wrestling as a kid and who pushed you the most throughout your career?
A: I started wrestling at age 5.  The coaches who mushed me the most were my Dad & my club coach Jerry Seaman.

Q: What is your favorite wrestling movie?
A: I am not sure I have a favorite, but I did enjoy Win Win.  Probably the best acting of any wrestling movie I have seen.

Q: Who is your favorite professional sports team:
A: Pittsburgh Penguins. I am a big hockey fan.

Q: What is your favorite TV Show?
A: Seinfeld is my go-to show.  However, USA Network has a few series that I'm pretty hooked on right now.

Q: What is the last book you've read?
A: We're with Nobody - It is a series of true stories about two journalist turned political informants that dig up dirt on political candidates.

Q: What is your favorite food?
A: Ice cream

A: Kabuki in Cary - a great Japanese steakhouse & sushi bar.

Leaders of the PACK: Getting to Know Jamill Kelly

Here's today's interview with Coach Jamill Kelly:

Q: What made you decide to be a college wrestling coach?
A: I wanted to have the ability to help kids achieve their goals on and off the mat.  Having been an athlete myself, I know how important a role coaches play in an athlete's life.

Q: What is your favorite style of wrestling to coach? Why?
A: Obviously in the US we are coaching folkstyle the majority of the time. I like to coach freestyle because of the chess match it involves - a lot more tactics and strategy. As a coach I feel it challenges me a bit more having to deal with so many different styles from other countries.

Q: What is your most memorable moment as a coach? As an athlete?
A: As a coach, helping Boris Novachcov bounce back from a disappointing loss in the quarterfinals of NCAAs and having him come back and get 3rd place and ending his career with a victory.  Although it wasn't what he wanted, I was happy to see him bounce back and finish third. As an athlete, making the Olympic team was obviously a dream come true.

Q: When did you start wrestling as a kid and who pushed you the most throughout your career?
A:  I started wrestling my freshman year in high school after my freshman football coach talked me in to giving it a try.  He pushed me throughout my high school career and I wouldn't be where I am without him.  Obviously John Smith played a pivotal role in my career after having a disappointing college career he still kept me working and believed in me that I could do better.

Q: Who is your favorite professional sports team:
A: I'm more of a college sports fan.

Q: What is your favorite TV Show?
A: It varies, but I've always liked watching Law & Order

Q: What is the last book you've read?
A: The Alchemist

Q: What is your favorite food?
A: Steak

Q: What is your favorite Raleigh-area restaurant so far?
A: The Flying Biscuit

Leaders of the PACK: Getting to Know Frank Beasley

Here's today's interview with Coach Frank Beasley:

Q: What made you decide to be a college wrestling coach?
A: I love the sport of wrestling and enjoy sharing my knowledge.  I have a passion for the sport and for coaching.  When I finished college, I immediately became a college coach as I had always been involved in coaching camps, clinics, and clubs.  I had the opportunity to coach at my Alma Mater while earning my Master's degree.  I really developed a passion for coaching and had a great mentor.  Ultimately the thing that motivated me to be a college coach is the fact that I did not accomplish all of my goals in college and I wanted to help others achieve theirs.

Q: What is your favorite style of wrestling to coach? Why?
A: I like to coach all three - freestyle, Greco-Roman, and folkstyle.  Folkstyle is my favorite of the three.  I find it the most exciting and really like the mat wrestling component of the sport.

Q: What is your most memorable moment as a coach?
A: My most memorable moment as a coach was coaching my first All-American.  In my first year as a coach, I was the personal coach for Mike Spaid (HWT, Bloomsburg).  I'll never forget his multiple overtime match to earn All-America honors.  He was the first All-American at the school in 14 years and it was a very exciting moment for everyone involved.

Q: When did you start wrestling as a kid and who pushed you the most throughout your career?
A: I started wrestling when I was ten years old in January of 1995.  I fell in love with the sport right away and couldn't get enough of it.  I started wrestling year round from the beginning. I was very self-motivated throughout my career so I pushed myself more than anyone else.  I had several great coaches and teammates who pushed me as well.  My parents didn't push me at a young age because they wanted me to enjoy the sport; however, they taught me the work ethic necessary to be successful and that nothing is worth doing if you don't give it 100% of your effort.

Q: What is your favorite wrestling movie?
A: Reversal - there are some great one-liners.  Also, watch the part where "Johnny" breaks his arm - classic.

Q: Who is your favorite professional sports team:
A: I'm not a huge sports fan.  I follow the sport of wrestling closely at all levels.  When I watch football, I root for the Indianapolis Colts & for baseball, the St. Louis Cardinals.  These were the closest teams to me growing up.  I don't follow basketball but would say the Phoenix Suns since that is the only professional game I've been to when visiting my brother.  My favorite hockey team is the Buffalo Sabres as I went to several of their games when I was at Buffalo.

Q: What is your favorite TV Show?
A: Eastbound & Down

Q: What is the last book you've read?
A: Wrestling is Life: A Novel (fiction)
    The Art of War (non-fiction)
Terry Funk: More than just Hardcore (currently reading)

Q: What is your favorite food?
A: Cottage cheese - I can eat it with anything

Q: What is your favorite Raleigh-area restaurant so far?
A: Brasa Steak House - how can you go wrong with an all-you-can-eat Brazilian steakhouse?

GoPack Press Release: Breese Hired as Wrestling Director of Operations

Original article published here

Raleigh, N.C. - NC State wrestling head coach Pat Popolizio has announced the hire of Jeff Breese as the Pack's Director of Operations to round out his first staff. Breese, a former wrestler at NC State, spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Northern Illinois.

"Jeff will be taking over a lot of day-to-day tasks and assist in managing all aspects of the program," said Popolizio. "He will be a big asset administratively which will allow our staff to spend more time and energy on the development of our student-athletes.

"We're excited to have Jeff on our staff. He has had a variety of experiences working at different levels of wrestling and outside of wrestling. He brings a wealth of knowledge in all aspects of our sport. He will have an immediate impact on our program. As a graduate of NC State, he will be valuable in helping us build relationships with our alumni."

During his two seasons at Northern Illinois, Breese coached four NCAA qualifiers, and recently completed the NWCA Leadership Academy.

Jeff Breese joined the Huskies coaching staff after three seasons of collegiate coaching in Pennsylvania. Breese's coaching career began in 2006 as an assistant at Division II Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pa. During his two years at Seton Hill, Breese coached two NCAA qualifiers and one NCAA All-American. He also played a large role in recruiting student-athletes and building the brand new program.

Also, Breese spent the 2009-2010 season as the head coach at Penn State-New Kensington, once again building a new program from the ground floor.

Additionally, he has found great success coaching at the high school level. Breese worked closely with both Iron Horse Wrestling Academy in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Flight Time Wrestling Club in Claysville, Pa. While coaching at these clubs, he helped produce numerous state champions, state medalists, Cadet/Junior National All-Americans, and several NCAA Division I and II recruits.

Breese wrestled collegiately with the Pack from 2002-06. Despite an injury-plagued career, Breese was a three-year starter and a member of the Wolfpack's 2004 ACC championship team.
